"Don
Quixote" - Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m. local time
The
adventures of the bumbling knight Don Quixote and his ever-faithful
squire Sancho Panza have been the inspiration for countless ballets and
one of the most well-loved version is by 19th-century Russian
choreographer Marius Petipa. Carlos Acosta has danced the virtuoso role
of Basilio many times, and now brings his unique and vibrant vision to
the story, drawing on Petipa and with music by Ludwig Minkus, full of
Spanish flair and atmosphere. "Don Quixote," with its famously bravura
Act III pas de deux and its infectious joie de vivre, makes for a
wonderfully entertaining evening.
"Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland" — Tuesday, Nov. 19 at
7:00 p.m. local time
Pre-recorded earlier this year in April
and featuring U.S. dancer Sarah Lamb, Alice encounters a cast of
extraordinary characters down the rabbit hole including the
highly-strung Queen of Hearts, who performs a hilarious rendition of the
famous Rose Adagio from "The Sleeping Beauty;" to dancing playing cards;
a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. There is a love
narrative for Alice and the Knave of Hearts, and they dance a tender pas
de deux at the close of Act II. But the ballet does not avoid the darker
undercurrents of Lewis Carroll's story — a nightmarish kitchen, an
eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and an unhinged tea party are all
created in vivid detail.
"The
Nutcracker" — Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 p.m. local time
A
young girl's enchanted present leads her on a wonderful adventure in
this classic ballet, accompanied by Tchaikovsky's glittering score. From
the very first notes of Tchaikovsky's overture to "The Nutcracker," a
sense of mystery and magic pervades the theatre as Herr Drosselmeyer
sets in motion the events that will see his beloved nephew, Hans Peter,
freed from the enchantment of the evil Mouse King by the resourceful
Clara. "The Nutcracker" unfolds over two glorious acts. Peter
Wright's classic production, first seen at Covent Garden in 1984, is an
essential part of Christmas for audiences of all ages.
"This exciting new series brings all the splendor of London's Royal
Opera House to the local cinema," said Shelly Maxwell, executive vice
president of NCM Fathom Events. "With ‘The Royal Opera House Ballet
Series,' ballet fans will experience the best of The Royal Ballet's
brilliant choreography and vivid set design without ever having to
travel abroad."
